The report is made up of a conversation between reporter Ray Saurez, a Veteran’s care advocate, and two physicians. It covers a number of concerns about the current system and concerns about what might occur with the creation of a system that would create a single health record for a patient that contains his or her entire record as posted by all providers who have provided care.

One of the physicians is Dr. Deborah Peel. She is involved in a group concerned with Patient Privacy Rights

An article in the technology section of today’s New York Times caught my eye. This reminded me of a good friend of ours who had to see a specialist. He was meeting this specialist for the first time about care for an existing condition. Knowing of my interest in paper vs. electronic medical note taking, he mentioned his discomfort with the interview. The physician was facing into the corner of the exam room, for the entire time, in order to key in information into forms showing on a computer display. In the article by Dr. Anne Armstrong-Coben, an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at Columbia University, she wrote:

FOR 20 years, I practiced pediatric medicine with a paper chart. I would sit with my young patients and their families, chart in my lap, making eye contact and listening to their stories. I could take patients’ histories in the order they wanted to tell them or as I wanted to ask. I could draw pictures of birthmarks, rashes or injuries. I loved how patients could participate in their own charts - illustrating their cognitive development as they went from showing me how they could draw a line at age 2 and a circle at 3 to proudly writing their names at 5.

Many care givers are being pushed to use the computer. It appears easier to handle than the typical medical chart, a manila folder with metal prong fasteners holding an unwieldy stack of paper with typed or hand written progress notes intermixed with lab reports, correspondence from consultants, hospital visit records, and other information especially important to the specialty of the practice and the specific health issues of the patient.

We have worked with medical practices and institutions to provide the components of patient charts that are easy to use because the pages of data are separated into sections by type. The dividers have plastic reinforced tabs printed with the subject of the section (progress, x-ray, lab, corr., etc). The effect is instant access to the desired information. Please stop by our store. It lists a broad range of chart supplies. If you don’t find exactly what you want, call or write to discuss your application. We will supply any Smead Manufacturing product and design and make custom products that will solve your problem.

Sahler is a small company long on experience and very low on overhead. We pass those savings along to all.

“In his press conference Monday night, President Obama went out of his way to explain why that money belonged in the economic stimulus package. It is, he said, a job-creating investment in both the present and the future that will improve the quality of care and save lives.

“But in a letter delivered Tuesday to the White House and Congressional offices, 50 of the nation?s leading experts in electronic health records ? most of them physicians themselves warned that ?an historic opportunity to achieve quality and efficiency gains through health information technology will be lost, unless the government channels the spending carefully.

Sahler sells all of the components required for the most effective patient charting systems. That includes folders, labels, index dividers to sort contents by subjects, software to print strip labels with color coding that matches any single label system and offers the option of? bar code printing.
